The Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency (ECPTA) is proud to announce that Mkambati Nature Reserve has been officially declared a Ramsar Site, recognizing it as a wetland of international importance.
Do you know what a Ramsar Site is? It’s a wetland recognized internationally for its importance in conserving biodiversity and ecological health!
Nestled along the Indian Ocean, about 71 km from Flagstaff, Mkambati spans over 1,000 hectares and is one of the most ecologically significant areas in the Pondoland Centre of Plant Endemism.
This incredible reserve is home to:
196 endemic plant species, including the threatened Natal quince, Pondo white pear, Kei bauhinia, and Pondo lanternflower.
A diverse array of wildlife, including the nationally endangered variable legless skink, the globally threatened Boneberg’s frog, and rare fish species like the river bream.
